Non-Toxic Detergent / Laundry Washing Powder
In my pursuit to living a healthier lifestyle, for the whole family and to keep my son’s eczema at bay, I’ve discovered the importance of keeping our largest organ, the skin, free from highly toxic substances commonly found in supermarket detergents and various body products.
Our skin serves as the gateway to our bodies, making it crucial to exercise caution in selecting the products we use at home, particularly when it comes to a baby’s delicate skin.
WHY? Because some ingredients found in everyday household products have been found to be carcinogenic (potential to cause cancer). Some companies aren’t aware of this but oh dear look what happened with Johnson & Johnsons Baby Powder!
Detergents often contain synthetic fragrances, which are designed to provide a pleasant scent but can also pose health risks. Although the amount of fragrance in each capsule may be small, the cumulative exposure to these chemicals can be significant, especially with daily use. Many synthetic fragrances are classified as endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with the body's hormonal system. This interference can lead to various health issues, as hormones regulate essential bodily functions. Therefore, touching, inhaling, and wearing clothes with these chemicals regularly can be a risk, highlighting the importance of being aware of the ingredients in everyday products. Considering alternatives with natural fragrances or fragrance-free options is advisable to minimise potential harm.
For fabric softener I use 1-2 cups of white vinegar (depending on load size) in every wash. Before you ask, it doesn't make your clothes smell like vinegar! In fact, it makes them whiter and very soft, especially towels. I like this bundle of 4 because it works out to under £5 a jug.
RECIPE HERE
Non-Toxic Laundry Detergent:
1/2 cup epsom salt - I like this brand
1 + 1/2 cups baking soda - I searched on amazon for hours to get the most reasonably priced for quality AND quantity, this one is 5KG so it lasts for ages!
1 + 1/2 cups washing soda - also known as Sodium Carbonate or Soda Ash - this one is 2KG but you can go larger and get 5KG
1/4 cup sea salt - you can use Himalayan or rock salt but I like to use the fine grain because it's easily distributed through the mix - this one is reasonably priced!
20-25 drops of 100% essential oil of choice - I like lavender or rose but just make sure they are 100% essential oil as sometimes they can sell cheap mixes that aren't 100%. I like this brand, Nikura, they seem to have a good customer following and great reputation in the UK. They do single scents or They have a set here which is great.
Rememeber to be safe when you're mixing this - wear gloves and a face mask - even though this is lower in toxins, you're still using single chemical elements so be safe and protect your lungs and skin.
